Anambra Implements Election Day Travel Ban for Gubernatorial Poll
In preparation for the upcoming gubernatorial election, the Anambra State Police Command has implemented a comprehensive vehicular movement restriction across the state on Saturday, November 8, 2025.
The travel ban, announced by Police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga, will be in effect from midnight until 6:00 PM on election day. The restriction encompasses all motorized transportation, including private and commercial vehicles, trucks, tricycles, motorcycles, and shuttle buses, affecting both local and interstate routes throughout Anambra.
The security measure emerged from a consensus reached during the Security Services Commanders meeting at Police State Headquarters, Awka, on November 5, 2025. The primary objective is to prevent potential disruption of the electoral process by political thugs and criminal elements.
Exemptions to the travel restriction apply only to essential personnel, including: – Designated INEC officials – Accredited journalists and election observers – Medical personnel – Emergency responders – Essential services providers
These exempt individuals must carry valid identification and clearance tags throughout the restriction period.
The police command has advised interstate travelers to plan alternative routes during the restriction period to avoid any inconvenience. The measure is part of a broader security strategy to ensure a peaceful election environment and protect citizens’ right to vote without intimidation.
“Residents are urged to comply with this security arrangement as it is designed to safeguard lives and property,” Ikenga stated, emphasizing the importance of public cooperation with security personnel deployed across the state to enforce the directive and maintain order.
This temporary restriction reflects similar measures implemented during previous Nigerian elections, aimed at ensuring electoral integrity and public safety during the critical voting period.
