Opposition Not Ready to Challenge Tinubu in 2027, Says Dele Momodu

Media entrepreneur and political commentator, Dele Momodu, has said the Nigerian opposition is currently too fragmented and unprepared to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

Momodu, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), argued that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar remains the only opposition figure with the structure, experience and seriousness required for the contest.

In a statement posted on his verified X account, Momodu questioned how presidential hopefuls within the opposition intend to defeat an incumbent when they have not even agreed on a unified plan.

“I often wonder how some opposition presidential aspirants can think of knocking out President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027… when they have not even come together to agree on a common strategy. Let me emphasize that contesting for the highest office in any country is no child’s play,” he wrote.

He described Atiku as the sole aspirant demonstrating real preparedness, noting that the 2027 race will mark his seventh attempt at the presidency.

“The only opposition leader who seems to understand what it takes to be competitive is Alhaji Atiku Abubakar,” Momodu said, adding that the former vice president “is meticulously and practically pursuing his dreams.”

Momodu warned that defeating an incumbent president would require far more than social media enthusiasm or political rhetoric.

“It would require a stupendous war chest… extensive and nationwide structures, religious balancing and overwhelming support from ethnic groups,” he said.

He added that several opposition figures appear unready, suggesting that some “have given up on their dreams” or are indifferent to Tinubu remaining in office.

“As for me and my house, many of the opposition figures are just not ready,” he stated.

Momodu also alleged that the recent withdrawal of police escorts from VIPs was politically targeted, claiming that “Atiku was one of the main targets” of the directive.

He urged opposition actors to remain vigilant, stressing that only a coordinated, well-funded and nationwide effort can mount a credible challenge to Tinubu in 2027.
