Nigeria Launches UN Youth Delegate Programme to Boost International Diplomacy

The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) and Global Relations Foundation (GRF) have established a groundbreaking initiative by opening the United Nations Youth Delegate Programme – Nigeria (UNYDP-NG) coordinating office in Abuja, marking a new era for youth representation in international diplomacy.

The landmark program, unveiled during a ceremony attended by youth leaders and organizational representatives, aims to create structured opportunities for Nigerian youth participation in UN assemblies and global development discussions.

NYCN President Comrade Babangida Onimisi Isah described the initiative as a crucial step toward institutionalizing global representation for young Nigerians. He acknowledged the support from the Federal Government, particularly the Ministries of Youth Development and Foreign Affairs, in advancing youth inclusion.

The program will select six National Youth Delegates, twelve Thematic Delegates, and six Regional Representatives to participate in UN youth assemblies, ECOSOC meetings, and SDG dialogues. These representatives will be trained and supported to effectively engage in international forums.

GRF Founder Jace Owie pledged his organization’s commitment to providing training and mentorship support. “This collaboration between NYCN and GRF bridges the gap between ideals and action,” Owie stated, highlighting the program’s role in enabling Nigerian youth participation in global development discussions.

NYCN National Program Officer Comrade Charles Osagie outlined the program’s core mission: ensuring Nigerian youth are not merely observers but active participants in UN processes and SDG implementation. The initiative aims to translate global insights into local action.

Assistant Secretary (Headquarters) of NYCN, Comrade Kabiru Audu, praised the program as a “transformative gateway” that will reshape international perceptions of Nigerian youth. The ceremony included the presentation of a Partnership Letter, preceding a formal MoU between NYCN and GRF.

NYCN Internal Auditor Comrade Abuchukwu Uzoma concluded the event by thanking the UN and reaffirming the council’s dedication to enhancing youth diplomacy. While the official launch date remains to be announced, the program represents a significant step forward in positioning Nigeria’s youth on the global stage.

This initiative marks a pivotal moment in Nigerian youth engagement with international institutions, promising to develop a new generation of globally-connected youth ambassadors equipped with diplomatic skills and leadership capabilities.
