Unresolved Mystery: The Legacy and Tragic End of Nigerian Football Legend Rashidi Yekini
The Nigerian football community continues to grapple with unanswered questions surrounding the death of Rashidi Yekini, who would have celebrated his 62nd birthday on October 23, 2023. The legendary striker, whose celebratory moment after scoring Nigeria’s first-ever World Cup goal in 1994 remains an enduring symbol in football history, died under mysterious circumstances in 2012.
Yekini’s remarkable career was defined by unprecedented achievements. As the 1993 African Footballer of the Year, he dominated the continent’s football scene with 13 goals across five African Nations Cup tournaments between 1984 and 1994. His prowess extended to European football, where he netted an impressive 90 goals in 108 appearances for Victoria Setubal in Portugal, joining an elite group of African players to top a major European league’s scoring charts.
Known by nicknames such as “Ye-king,” “Gangling,” and “Goalsfather,” Yekini’s journey from poverty in Kaduna, Northern Nigeria, to football stardom was extraordinary. Despite his success, he remained notably private and reserved. Former Nigeria Captain Segun Odegbami, who played alongside Yekini, described him as someone whose life “was completely wrapped around football.”
The circumstances of Yekini’s death at age 48 raise disturbing questions. According to reports, approximately three weeks before his death on May 4, 2012, he was forcibly removed from his Ibadan home by alleged family members for supposed medical treatment. This wasn’t the first such attempt – former Oyo State Police Commissioner Baba Adisa Bolanta had previously intervened to prevent a similar incident in 2010.
Mohammed Olarewaju, Yekini’s longtime lawyer, expressed dismay at law enforcement’s reluctance to investigate the death. The police’s position that no formal complaint had been filed has drawn criticism from those seeking answers about the football icon’s passing.
Despite his significant contributions to Nigerian and African football, including performances that only legends like Laurent Pokou and Samuel Eto’o have surpassed, the mystery surrounding Yekini’s death remains unresolved. As Nigeria continues its pursuit of World Cup glory, the unresolved circumstances of one of its greatest football ambassadors’ death serves as a somber reminder of unfinished business in honoring his legacy.
The football community awaits the release of Yekini’s death certificate, which could potentially provide crucial insights into the final days of a man who brought immense pride to African football and whose World Cup celebration continues to resonate in football history.
