Nigerian House of Reps Reverses Course, Resumes Session Wednesday

House of Representatives Reverses Week-Long Adjournment Decision

The Nigerian House of Representatives has called off its planned one-week adjournment that was intended for discussions with the Executive branch regarding outstanding payments to local contractors for projects completed since 2024.

In a statement released Tuesday evening, House Spokesman Akintunde Rotimi announced that the chamber will resume its regular session on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, citing “positive developments” in ongoing negotiations between government stakeholders.

The initial adjournment decision came after lawmakers adopted a motion presented by the Minority Leader addressing two critical issues: the immediate settlement of local contractors’ payments and the implementation of the 2025 capital budget.

Dr. Yahaya Danzaria, Clerk of the House of Representatives, formally notified members through an internal memorandum about the change in schedule. The upcoming Wednesday session will provide an opportunity for House Leadership to brief members on progress made in addressing these financial matters and other pressing national issues.

The House will need to formally rescind its previous adjournment resolution during the Wednesday plenary to resume normal proceedings. House Leadership has urged all members to make necessary arrangements to attend the session.

This development represents a shift in the chamber’s approach to resolving the ongoing concerns about delayed payments to contractors and budget implementation challenges. The decision to return to regular sessions suggests potential progress in negotiations between the legislative and executive branches over these fiscal matters.

The resolution of these payment issues holds significant implications for both local contractors and the implementation of the current year’s capital budget, which affects various development projects across the country.
