Nigerian Athletics Federation Sets Ambitious Goals for Commonwealth Games After Tokyo Success
The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has unveiled its strategic plans to secure podium finishes at the upcoming Commonwealth Games, following a comprehensive review of the nation’s performance at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
AFN President Chief Tonobok Okowa announced these plans during a recent stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja, where he highlighted Nigeria’s impressive showing in Tokyo. The national team reached finals in multiple events, including the men’s 100m, women’s 100m hurdles, men’s 400m hurdles (where a national record was set), men’s 200m, and men’s shot put, ultimately securing a silver medal.
“We commend our athletes for giving Nigeria a positive image in Tokyo,” Okowa stated. “For us in the AFN, it was a huge achievement.”
The Federation is strengthening its support system through collaboration with sponsors and the National Sports Commission (NSC) to provide comprehensive backing for athletes, covering training, welfare, and logistics. With rising stars like Tobi Amusan, Udodi Onwuzurike, Ezekiel Nathaniel, Sunday Israel Okon, and Chukwuebuka Enekwechi showing promising form, the AFN leadership expressed confidence in achieving even better results.
Addressing practical challenges, the Federation plans to tackle visa procurement issues and equipment concerns. Okowa clarified that the recent partnership with Hi-Racer for the Tokyo Championships was temporary, indicating new arrangements with sportswear manufacturers are in development.
The AFN president also emphasized the crucial role of media support in motivating athletes, calling for continued positive coverage of Nigerian athletics. He concluded by acknowledging the contributions of board members, sponsors, media, and other stakeholders in advancing Nigerian athletics.
The Federation’s renewed commitment and strategic planning reflect its determination to build on recent successes and establish Nigeria as a formidable force in international athletics competitions.
