Nigeria Shines at Historic West African Para Badminton Championship
Nigeria made history at the first-ever International Para Badminton Championship held in West Africa, securing an impressive total of 16 medals at the tournament in Umuahia, Abia State. The host nation’s athletes captured three gold, four silver, and nine bronze medals in the groundbreaking competition.
In a showcase of exceptional talent, local hero Jeremiah Nnanna from Abia State clinched a gold medal, while Paralympic bronze medallist Eniola Bolaji dominated the women’s singles SL3 category, defeating Cameroon’s Danyele Mouafo. Mary Nathan added to Nigeria’s golden performance by triumphing over Brazil’s Juscileia Silva in the women’s singles WH1 division.
The international competition drew 114 athletes from 13 nations, competing across 19 events. Brazil emerged as the overall leader with seven gold, three silver, and five bronze medals, while India secured second place with six gold, five silver, and 14 bronze. Peru rounded out the top three with six gold, three silver, and two bronze medals.
During the closing ceremony at Umuahia’s International Conference Centre, Abia State Governor Alex Otti demonstrated his administration’s commitment to inclusive sports by pledging to host the event again in 2025. “Our mantra in Abia is inclusion,” Governor Otti declared, highlighting initiatives such as wheelchair-accessible public transportation. He further announced a $50,000 prize fund for the 144 participating athletes.
Badminton World Federation CEO Jeff Shingoli praised the host nation’s organization of the tournament, while Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN) President Francis Orbih expressed gratitude for the state’s support. Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, emphasized how the championship showcased the unlimited potential of para-athletes.
The event’s success was bolstered by the Abia State Government’s provision of essential equipment, including mats and wheelchairs, as noted by Samuel Ekeoma, Vice President of the Para Badminton Federation of Nigeria. The championship concluded with strong attendance from various dignitaries, including Deputy Governor Ikechukwu Emetu, state officials, and sports enthusiasts, marking a significant milestone in West African para sports history.
