Global Digital Infrastructure Giant Equinix Announces $22 Million Data Center Investment in Lagos
Equinix Inc., the worldwide leader in digital infrastructure, has unveiled plans to establish a state-of-the-art data center in Lagos, Nigeria, marking a significant milestone in Africa’s digital evolution. The facility, known as LG3, represents the initial phase of a broader $100 million investment strategy aimed at revolutionizing Africa’s digital infrastructure over the next two years.
The new data center, scheduled to begin operations in the first quarter of 2026, will introduce crucial infrastructure to Nigeria’s digital landscape. This development is designed to support local business expansion while attracting international enterprises to this strategically located connectivity hub.
A key feature of the LG3 facility is the integration of Equinix Fabric, enabling secure connections between physical and virtual infrastructure across Equinix’s global network. This technology allows businesses to seamlessly connect with cloud service providers, partners, and other companies worldwide.
Wole Abu, Managing Director for West Africa at Equinix, emphasized the project’s significance: “LG3 marks a significant milestone in Equinix’s long-term commitment to bridging Africa’s digital divide.” He highlighted how the facility will accelerate access to advanced technologies and support the startup ecosystem.
The strategic importance of the location is underscored by Nigeria’s position as Sub-Saharan Africa’s second-largest economy. Lagos, recognized as the only African city in the Global Top 100 Startup Ecosystems, stands at the forefront of the continent’s digital transformation.
Industry leaders have welcomed the development, with Olawale Owoeye, Managing Director at Cedarview, noting that the facility will provide the robust platform necessary for expanding their digital footprint and delivering high-performance solutions to customers.
Aslıhan Güreşcier, Vice President of EMEA Growth & Emerging Markets at Equinix, pointed to Africa’s accelerating digital transformation, driven by its young population and increasing internet penetration. The company’s expansion in Africa began in 2022, with successful launches in Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, and most recently, Johannesburg, South Africa.
Equinix’s global network now encompasses over 270 data centers, with the Lagos facility set to leverage Nigeria’s strategic position as a hub for international subsea cable connections linking Africa with Europe and Asia. The company maintains its commitment to sustainable operations across all facilities, including the new LG3 center, focusing on environmental responsibility and operational efficiency.
