New Cultural Works Chronicle Ibadan’s Rich Heritage in Landmark Launch Event
In a significant celebration of Yoruba culture and history, two major literary works and a film documenting Ibadan’s heritage were unveiled at the Theophilus Ogunlesi Hall, University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan on Thursday.
The Balogun of Ibadanland, His Royal Majesty, Oba Abimbola Tajudeen Ajibola, presented “Giant Strides, Ibadan Hegemony” and the Yoruba film “Agbeni” to an distinguished audience that included prominent traditional rulers, politicians, and academics.
The event gained substantial support from Ambassador Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, who contributed ₦5 million toward the launch, demonstrating his dedication to preserving Yoruba cultural heritage. The ceremony was graced by the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, as Royal Father of the Day, while Oyo State Governor Engineer Seyi Makinde attended as Special Guest of Honour.
During his address, Ambassador Ajadi emphasized Ibadan’s historical significance, describing it as “a symbol of strength, a home of wisdom, and a centre of Yoruba civilisation.” He praised Oba Ajibola’s initiative in documenting the city’s heritage through literature and film, highlighting the importance of cultural preservation for future generations.
The Balogun of Ibadanland explained that the works were conceived to document Ibadan’s evolution, political structures, and widespread influence. Governor Makinde endorsed the initiative, emphasizing how cultural projects contribute to state identity and economic growth.
The launch featured cultural performances and previews of “Agbeni,” which artistically portrays Ibadan’s political traditions. The event brought together an diverse audience including traditional rulers, academics, filmmakers, youth representatives, and political figures, all united in celebrating Ibadan’s cultural legacy.
Through this innovative combination of literature and film, the project aims to preserve and promote Yoruba heritage while serving as an educational resource for future generations, both within Nigeria and internationally.
