National Institute for Sports to Establish South-East Hub in Enugu

The Nigerian Federal Government has selected Enugu State as the location for the new South-East Zonal Headquarters of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), highlighting the state’s emergence as a regional center for sports development and infrastructure.

During a high-level meeting at the Enugu Government House on Friday, NIS Director General Comrade Philip Shaibu announced the strategic initiative while leading his management team in a courtesy visit to Governor Peter Mbah. The former Edo State Deputy Governor emphasized that Enugu’s selection stems from its impressive developmental strides under the current administration.

The planned facility will coordinate sports development activities across the five South-Eastern states – Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Imo, and Enugu. As part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, the zonal headquarters aims to decentralize sports administration and revitalize Nigeria’s sporting heritage through comprehensive Athletes and Coaches Development Programmes.

“This initiative goes beyond establishing an office – it represents the foundation of a sporting revolution that will nurture future Nigerian champions,” Shaibu explained, noting the state’s peaceful environment and ongoing sports infrastructure developments, including renovations at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium and Awgu Games Village.

Governor Mbah welcomed the federal government’s decision, emphasizing Enugu’s rich sporting heritage. “This is the city of sporting legends where champions were born, trained, and celebrated,” he stated. The governor pledged comprehensive support for the project, including office accommodation and logistical assistance to ensure successful implementation.

The establishment of the NIS South-East Zonal Headquarters aligns with Governor Mbah’s vision of inclusive governance and youth development. The facility is expected to create employment opportunities, enhance local infrastructure, and provide pathways for young athletes to access global sporting opportunities.

The project represents a significant step in strengthening Nigeria’s sports development infrastructure while recognizing Enugu’s strategic importance in the national sports landscape.
