Domestic Gas Key to Africa’s Economic Growth, Says Seplat Energy
Seplat Energy Plc has highlighted the transformative potential of domestic gas in driving economic prosperity across Nigeria and the broader African continent. The Nigerian independent energy company emphasizes gas’s versatile role in supporting residential needs, industrial operations, and providing environmentally friendlier alternatives for cooking and transportation.
During the 2025 Africa Energy Week (AEW) in Cape Town, South Africa, Seplat’s Director of New Energy, Mr. Okechukwu Mba, outlined the company’s strategic focus on expanding domestic gas infrastructure. The company has made significant investments in gas processing facilities, with their flagship ANOH gas plant scheduled to begin operations by year-end.
Speaking at a panel discussion titled “Beyond Exports: Developing Commercially Viable Domestic Gas Markets,” Mba addressed the critical challenges facing Nigeria’s gas-to-power value chain. He emphasized the need for comprehensive solutions spanning from wellhead extraction to residential power delivery to achieve Nigeria’s ambitious power supply goals.
The Seplat executive particularly stressed the importance of establishing a financially sustainable power sector, identifying it as a crucial factor in fostering growth within the domestic gas market. This focus on commercial viability reflects the company’s commitment to developing sustainable energy solutions that can support long-term economic development in Nigeria and across Africa.
The initiative aligns with Nigeria’s broader energy transition goals and efforts to maximize its substantial gas reserves for domestic benefit rather than solely focusing on exports. This strategic approach could help address the country’s persistent power supply challenges while promoting cleaner energy alternatives.
