Bauchi Extends Maternity Leave to Six Months, Introduces Workplace Childcare Facilities

The Bauchi State Government has made a landmark decision to extend maternity leave for nursing mothers from four to six months, marking a significant step forward in maternal and child healthcare support. The policy change was approved during an extraordinary State Executive Council (SEC) meeting on Tuesday at the Governor’s Office.

In a comprehensive reform of workplace policies, the government announced that the extended leave will benefit all nursing mothers employed across the state’s ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs). The initiative also includes plans to establish crèche facilities in government offices, creating a more family-friendly work environment.

State Head of Civil Service, Barrister Mohammed Sani Umar, revealed that the new policy will be formalized through legislation by the State House of Assembly. The extended leave period will commence from the date of delivery, and upon returning to work, mothers will be granted flexible hours to attend to their infants’ needs.

The policy amendment aligns with Civil Service Regulations under Sections 1122 and 1126, with an establishment circular to be issued shortly. To implement these changes effectively, the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has been tasked with coordinating the development of suitable workplace environments for nursing mothers, including the setup of crèche facilities.

This progressive move represents the successful culmination of sustained advocacy by various civil society organizations (CSOs) at local, national, and international levels. The policy aims to promote exclusive breastfeeding and ensure optimal care for newborns while supporting working mothers in maintaining their professional responsibilities.

The initiative places Bauchi among the states leading in maternal welfare policies in Nigeria, demonstrating a commitment to both public service efficiency and family well-being.
