Strasbourg Stages Comeback to Defeat Crystal Palace in Conference League Clash
Crystal Palace suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat against Strasbourg in Thursday’s UEFA Conference League match, despite taking an early lead in the contest.
The Premier League side opened the scoring through Tyrick Mitchell, and seemed poised to extend their advantage when Ismaila Sarr’s effort struck the woodwork with Strasbourg’s goalkeeper Mike Penders caught in no man’s land. However, the French team mounted a successful second-half comeback to maintain their unbeaten record in the tournament.
The turning point came early after the break when Emanuel Emegha capitalized on Diego Moreira’s cross, tapping in at the far post to level the scores. Palace then squandered a golden opportunity when Adam Wharton struck the crossbar with an open goal at his mercy, following a Strasbourg defensive error.
In a dramatic sequence of events, Penders made a crucial save to deny Yeremy Pino before Strasbourg immediately countered. Young talent Samir El Mourabet emerged as the hero, converting the rebound after Julio Enciso’s free-kick had rattled the post, securing a 2-1 victory for the hosts.
Following the match, Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner expressed his frustration at his team’s wastefulness in front of goal. “When you twice have an empty goal in front of you and you miss the goal twice hitting the post, you should be 3-1 up,” he told TNT Sports, adding that such missed opportunities have been a recurring issue this season.
The result sees Strasbourg join Samsunspor at the summit of the group with 10 points, after the Turkish side drew 2-2 with Iceland’s Breidablik. Palace now find themselves in 18th position with a record of two wins and two losses in their maiden European campaign. With upcoming fixtures against Shelbourne of Ireland and Finnish side KuPS, they remain within striking distance of the top eight positions, which guarantee direct passage to the round of 16.
In other Conference League action, Aberdeen’s search for their first win continues following a 1-1 home draw with Armenian side Noah.
