During a press briefing on Monday, the Edo State Governor, Osagie Okpebholo, stated that he would step down in 2027 if President Bola Ahmed Tinubu fails to win re-election at the end of his first term.
Governor Okpebholo insisted that his continued hold on office is tied to Tinubu’s performance at the national level. According to him, failure of the president to secure a second term would amount to a failure of his own mandate, hence his readiness to resign.
He urged supporters of his administration in Edo State to rally behind Tinubu ahead of the general elections, emphasizing that union between state and federal leadership is key to delivering results. Okpebholo reminded citizens that the future of his administration depends on a positive outcome for the president.
The governor’s statement has stirred debate across the state as citizens and opposition groups weigh the implications of a conditional tenure tied to national electoral success.
