President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the immediate withdrawal of police officers assigned to protect Very Important Persons across the country. The directive was issued during a security meeting held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja with top service chiefs and the leadership of the Department of State Services.
According to the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, police personnel currently attached to politicians, businessmen and other VIPs will be reassigned to core policing duties. These duties include patrol, crime prevention and strengthening security presence in communities where officers are currently lacking. The government described the move as part of a broader effort to restore professionalism and improve public safety nationwide.
Under the new arrangement, VIPs who require personal security will now be expected to obtain armed protection from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps. The Presidency explained that this change is intended to free up thousands of police officers and return them to regular operational work.
President Tinubu also approved the recruitment of 30,000 additional police officers to boost manpower and improve response capabilities across all states. The federal government is working with state governments to upgrade police training facilities and ensure that newly recruited officers receive modern and effective training.
Those present at the security meeting included the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Director General of the DSS, Tosin Adeola Ajayi.
