Breaking New Ground: Biodun Stephen Champions Female Voices in Nollywood

In a groundbreaking move for Nigerian cinema, acclaimed filmmaker Biodun Stephen has thrown her weight behind F.R.A.M.E. (Female Representation & Advancement In Media), an innovative initiative set to revolutionize women’s roles in Nollywood. The project will launch at the Nigerian Film & TV Summit (NIFS) on August 26, 2025, at Lagos’ Legend Hotel, marking a significant milestone for female representation in the industry.

F.R.A.M.E., curated by the Women In The Arts Collective, isn’t just another industry program – it’s a comprehensive incubator and accelerator designed to transform how women participate in Nigerian media and arts. At its core, the initiative aims to equip emerging female filmmakers with essential tools, from mentorship to resources, helping them craft compelling narratives that challenge the status quo.

The timing couldn’t be more crucial. Despite Nollywood’s position as Africa’s cultural powerhouse, female perspectives have often been sidelined, with women’s roles both on and off-screen frequently reduced to limiting stereotypes. Stephen, known for her impactful contributions to Nigerian cinema, will address these challenges head-on in her presentation “Rewriting Her Story.”

The summit will feature a power-packed panel discussion bringing together industry heavyweights, including Ego Boyo and Women In The Arts Convener Brenda Fashugba, with cultural curator Wana Udobang moderating. Their conversation will tackle pressing issues from workplace safety to leadership opportunities for women in the industry.

“For too long, women’s stories have been told for them, not by them,” Stephen emphasizes, highlighting the program’s mission to empower female storytellers with both creative freedom and practical support. The initiative goes beyond talk, offering funding pathways for women-led projects and concrete steps toward dismantling industry barriers.

For those eager to be part of this transformative movement, admission is free with NIFS 2025 registration, opening doors for the next generation of female filmmakers to reshape Nollywood’s future.
