Modernizing Nigerian Agriculture: ACCI President Advocates for Tech-Driven Farming Revolution
In a significant push for agricultural modernization, the Abuja Chambers of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) President, Emeka Obegolu, has emphasized the urgent need for Nigeria to transition to mechanized farming and digital agricultural practices. Speaking at the second edition of FARMFATECH expo 2025 in Abuja, Obegolu highlighted agriculture’s crucial role in Nigeria’s economy, particularly its substantial contribution to employment and GDP.
Through his representative, ACCI Vice President on Agriculture, Mr. Olasetemi Bode Thompson, Obegolu stressed that despite agriculture’s importance, Nigeria’s current agricultural productivity remains significantly below its potential. He emphasized that technological advancement in farming is no longer optional but essential, describing technology as “the new tractor” that drives growth, efficiency, and competitiveness in the sector.
The expo, focused on farm and food allied technology, serves as a platform for stakeholders across the agricultural value chain to collaborate and innovate. “FARMFATECH 2025 speaks directly to the heart of Nigeria’s economic transformation agenda,” Obegolu stated, emphasizing the expo’s role in modernizing agricultural systems and strengthening food security through technology-driven solutions.
Marcus Olaniyi, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, represented by Abubakar Musa, Director of Federal Food and Drug Authority, reinforced the government’s commitment to agricultural development. He highlighted that the ministry currently operates under the National Agricultural Technology and Innovation Policy (NATIP), demonstrating its dedication to embracing digitalization and technological innovation in agriculture.
The initiative aims to address several challenges facing Nigerian agriculture, including insecurity and limited access to arable land, while promoting sustainable value chain practices. The focus on mechanization is expected to enable large-scale production, reduce labor intensity, and enhance efficiency throughout the agricultural sector.
This push for agricultural modernization aligns with Nigeria’s broader economic transformation goals, positioning the sector as a key driver of national development and food security. The expo continues to serve as a crucial meeting point for farmers, investors, policymakers, researchers, and innovators to explore new opportunities in agriculture.
