Nigeria Records Progress in Electricity Metering as DisCos Add Over 70,000 New Meters
In a significant development for Nigeria’s power sector, electricity distribution companies (DisCos) successfully deployed 70,888 new meters during August 2025, according to the latest data from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
The figures, released in NERC’s Metering Factsheet covering July and August 2025, show steady progress in the nation’s electricity metering program. The Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) witnessed an increase in active electricity customers, rising from 11.89 million in July to 11.96 million in August 2025.
Of the total customer base, 6.58 million users now have meters installed, pushing the national metering rate to 55.01 percent, a slight improvement from July’s 54.71 percent. Three distribution companies emerged as leading performers in meter deployment: Ikeja DisCo with 84.83 percent, Eko DisCo with 84.25 percent, and Abuja DisCo with 73.92 percent metering rates.
To accelerate the metering initiative, NERC has approved N28 billion in funding for DisCos to procure and install meters for unmetered customers in Bands ‘A’ and ‘B’ within their franchise areas. The allocation will be distributed based on each DisCo’s respective contributions to the sector.
The Commission has also established the Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF) to address the financing challenges faced by DisCos in securing funds for meter acquisition and deployment. This initiative aims to support critical capital investments and expedite the closure of the national metering gap.
The ongoing metering efforts represent a crucial step toward improving billing accuracy and transparency in Nigeria’s electricity sector, addressing long-standing concerns about estimated billing practices and ensuring more reliable power distribution across the country.
