PDP Suffers Major Blow as Over 100 Members Switch to APC in Abia State
In a significant political shift, more than 100 members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have abandoned their party to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State. The mass transition occurred during Sunday’s launch of the Renewed Hope Partners (RHP) initiative in Obingwa Local Government Area.
The defectors, spearheaded by former PDP State Secretary Barr. Ibe Nwadioha, publicly pledged their support to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and aligned themselves with House of Representatives Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu’s leadership.
According to a statement released by Levinus Nwabughiogu, Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Speaker, the event drew substantial attendance from party supporters and community leaders. Deputy Speaker Kalu warmly received the new members, praising their decision to join what he described as a movement dedicated to Nigeria’s reconstruction and the South East region’s advancement.
Speaking at the ceremony, Nwadioha characterized his switch to the APC as a decisive moment for Obingwa’s political landscape. “My entry into the APC marks the end of every other political party in Obingwa Local Government,” he declared. “It’s a historic moment, and the wind of change you have brought is sweeping through our communities like a hurricane. We will stand by Mr. President and support the APC.”
The occasion was marked by a symbolic ceremony where Obingwa APC stakeholders, including Dr. Nyerere Chinenye Ayim, former Federal Commissioner representing the South East at the National Pension Commission (PENCOM), presented Deputy Speaker Kalu with traditional attire and a machete. These items, representing honor, courage, and leadership, acknowledged Kalu’s contributions to national development and his commitment to the South East region.
The successful launch of the RHP initiative and the mass defection signal growing support for the APC in Abia State, traditionally considered a PDP stronghold, potentially reshaping the region’s political dynamics.
