SDP Chair Condemns Trumps Nigeria Comments as Sovereignty Threat

Nigerian Political Leader Challenges Trump’s Religious Persecution Claims

The National Chairman of Nigeria’s Social Democratic Party (SDP) has strongly rejected former U.S. President Donald Trump’s allegations of Christian genocide in Nigeria, calling for a more nuanced understanding of the nation’s security challenges.

SDP Chairman Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam issued a detailed response in Abuja, addressing Trump’s comments that had previously influenced the U.S. decision to designate Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern regarding religious freedom violations.

“The security challenges facing Nigeria affect all citizens, regardless of their faith,” Gabam emphasized, pointing out that the majority of victims in the heavily affected North-East and North-West regions are actually Muslims. This reality, he argued, contradicts Trump’s singular focus on Christian persecution.

In response to these allegations, Gabam urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to mount a diplomatic offensive by appointing capable ambassadors who can effectively communicate Nigeria’s position on the global stage. “We need informed and strategic international engagement backed by facts and figures,” he stated.

The SDP chairman acknowledged that while Nigeria faces significant governance and security challenges, the solution lies in strengthening domestic institutions rather than yielding to external pressures. He referenced Trump’s history of controversial statements about Nigeria, including characterizing the country as “fantastically corrupt” and implementing visa restrictions on its citizens.

Gabam outlined several key recommendations for the Tinubu administration, including: – Implementing comprehensive security sector reforms – Enhancing professionalism in security agencies – Developing homegrown solutions to terrorism and banditry – Building stronger trust between government and citizens – Fostering genuine international partnerships

“Our nation requires partnership and support, not threats,” Gabam concluded, emphasizing that Nigeria’s path to stability depends on strong leadership, institutional reform, and national unity rather than external intervention.

The controversy highlights the ongoing challenge Nigeria faces in managing its international reputation while addressing domestic security concerns that affect all religious and ethnic communities within its borders.
