APC Secures Unexpected Victory at Peter Obi’s Polling Unit in Anambra
In a surprising turn of events, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has emerged victorious at the polling unit where former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi cast his vote in Amatutu village, Agulu, Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The ruling party secured 73 votes at Polling Unit 019, Umudimakasi, surpassing the Labour Party’s 57 votes. The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) finished third with 38 votes, while other parties including YPP, ZLP, APM, ADC, and AAC each received a single vote.
This unexpected outcome carries particular significance given Obi’s strong political influence in Agulu and the broader Anaocha region. While this election is not a presidential contest, the results have attracted widespread attention due to the area’s historical alignment with Obi’s political interests. The presence of APC’s governorship running mate, Senator Uche Ekwunife, who hails from the area, may have influenced the voting pattern.
The APC’s success extended beyond Obi’s polling unit, with the party showing strong performance in neighboring areas. At Polling Unit 015 in Amatutu Village Hall, APC dominated with 117 votes, substantially ahead of APGA’s 29 votes and Labour Party’s 10 votes. The trend continued at Polling Unit 023 at the Model Primary Health Care Centre, where APC garnered 25 votes, followed by APGA with 8 and Labour Party with 7 votes, while YPP and ADC each received one vote.
This consistent performance across multiple polling units suggests a possible shift in voter allegiance in Anaocha, an area traditionally considered a stronghold for APGA and more recently, the Labour Party. The final impact of these results remains to be seen as vote collation continues across the Local Government Area and the entire state.
