Veteran Politician Shekarau Pledges Lifelong Commitment to Nigerian Politics
Former Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau has declared his intention to remain politically active throughout his life, emphasizing his view of politics as both a religious duty and public service. The announcement came during a media interaction in Kano, where he celebrated his 70th birthday.
Shekarau, who served as senator for Kano Central in the 9th National Assembly, articulated his longstanding philosophy that intertwines his political and religious beliefs. “My politics is my religion, and my religion is my politics,” he stated, underlining his faith-based approach to governance.
The former Minister of Education emphasized that his political engagement stems from a religious obligation to help select capable leaders. “I am not going to check out of politics because participating in the process of producing credible and trustworthy leaders is part of service to humanity, and that is a religious duty in Islam,” Shekarau explained.
His political journey began in the 1980s during his student days, where he successfully contested various leadership positions in educational circles. By 1988, he had risen to become National President of the Police Schools in Nigeria, overseeing more than 8,000 institutions. These early experiences laid the foundation for his later political career.
A significant milestone in Kano’s political history was achieved when Shekarau became the first politician to defeat an incumbent governor, leading the state from 2003 to 2011. He attributes this success to his faith, disciplined approach, and strong public trust.
Addressing current national challenges, Shekarau acknowledged the federal government’s efforts while calling for increased attention to pressing issues. “No nation is without crime, but government must not allow criminality to thrive. When people can afford food and live decently, peace will naturally follow,” he observed.
The veteran politician also expressed concerns about the current political climate, advocating for opposition parties to unite to strengthen democratic institutions. Despite past challenges and disappointments, Shekarau maintains a positive outlook, viewing political setbacks as divine will rather than personal failures.
Looking ahead, he pledged to continue supporting administrations that prioritize public welfare, regardless of political affiliations. “I am optimistic and will continue to support any government that works for the peace and welfare of our people, regardless of political differences,” Shekarau concluded.
