Unity Through Sport: 27th NUGA Games Launch at University of Jos
The University of Jos became the epicenter of Nigerian collegiate sports as it welcomed the 27th Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) Games, inaugurated on Saturday with a spectacular opening ceremony that highlighted the nation’s sporting spirit and cultural diversity.
Over 4,000 student-athletes have converged on Jos to participate in this prestigious multi-sport event, competing across 23 different disciplines. The Games, operating under the motto “Unity, Play in Peace,” represent one of Nigeria’s largest gatherings of university athletic talent.
The J.T. Useni Stadium came alive during the opening festivities, featuring vibrant cultural performances and a parade of university contingents, culminating in the traditional lighting of the NUGA torch. A total of 4,181 athletes will showcase their skills in various sports, from traditional athletics and football to modern additions like e-sports.
Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang demonstrated his administration’s support by announcing significant infrastructure improvements, including renovations to the stadium fence, tartan track, and pavilion. “Sports are a powerful instrument for peace, unity, and youth development. We will do everything possible to make these Games a resounding success,” Governor Mutfwang declared. He also instructed the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development to maintain a presence at the Games Village throughout the event.
University of Jos Vice-Chancellor Ishaya Tanko expressed confidence in the institution’s preparedness, stating, “We are hosting to win, to celebrate new talent, and to demonstrate the power of sports to unite young people from every corner of Nigeria.”
The Games’ impact extends beyond sports, promising to boost local tourism and economic activity in Jos, a city famous for its picturesque landscapes and cultural attractions. The organizing committee has mobilized over 1,000 volunteers, with support from 67 media personnel and 193 observing athletes from newly registered universities.
Preparations began on November 6 as athletes moved into university accommodations. The UNIJOS 2025 Games will continue through November 16, serving as a testament to Nigeria’s commitment to youth development and national unity through sports.
